Righteousness Includes Peace

Matthew 5:19-20

“Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

John 3:3, 5-6

“Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Colossians 3:1-2, 5-15

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:

    • sexual immorality,
    • impurity,
    • passion,
    • evil desire, and
    • covetousness, which is idolatry.

On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

But now you must put them all away:

    • anger,
    • wrath,
    • malice,
    • slander, and
    • obscene talk from your mouth.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,

    • compassionate hearts,
    • kindness,
    • humility,
    • meekness, and
    • patience, bearing with one another and,
    • if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
    • And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

to which indeed you were called in one body.

  • And be thankful.”

Galatians 5:16-21

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Now the works of the flesh are evident:

    • sexual immorality,
    • impurity,
    • sensuality,
    • idolatry,
    • sorcery,
    • enmity,
    • strife,
    • jealousy,
    • fits of anger,
    • rivalries,
    • dissensions,
    • divisions,
    • envy,
    • drunkenness,
    • orgies,
    • and things like these.

I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Mark 7:21-23

“For from within, out of the heart of man, come

      • evil thoughts,
      • sexual immorality,
      • theft,
      • murder,
      • adultery,
      • coveting,
      • wickedness,
      • deceit,
      • sensuality,
      • envy,
      • slander,
      • pride,
      • foolishness.

All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.””

Galatians 5:22-25

But the fruit of the Spirit is

    • love,
    • joy,
    • peace,
    • patience,
    • kindness,
    • goodness,
    • faithfulness,
    • gentleness,
    • self-control;

against such things there is no law.

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

Matthew 7:20

“Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
